Criteria---Performance will be satisfactory when:
o learner produces a five-seven page academic research paper with 80% grammatical and mechanical accuracy
o learner gathers and organizes source information
o learner prepares accurate summaries and synthesis of information gathered from sources
o learner incorporates alternative perspectives on a topic
o learner presents his or her own point of view on information and analysis taken from sources
o learner supports a thesis with varied, relevant evidence
o learner cites sources
o learner prepares a list of works cited for the research paper


Conditions---Competence will be demonstrated:
o in classroom and library setting
o in the production of written work using a word processor
o in peer and small group review
o through instructor conference
o by using a checklist or rubric
o under instructor observation

Learning Objectives
This learning plan addresses the following learning objectives to help you master the competency:
a. Identify, choose, and organize credible and current resources from periodicals, newspapers, journals, magazines, textbooks, and people.
b. Select and use technology to locate information: library database and Internet.
c. Interpret graphic representations: pictures, graphs, tables, cartoons, flowcharts, and diagrams.
d. Detect bias in data through analysis, comparison and research.
e. Test validity of information (source, objectivity, and technical accuracy).
f. Use MLA or other standard academic documentation formats to cite resources in written documents.
g. Use research techniques such as interviewing, questioning and surveying.
h. Evaluate, synthesize, summarize and paraphrase information.
i. Revise and edit for content, organization, grammar and mechanics.

o learner writes a minimum of two 3-5 paragraph argument essays with 80% grammatical and mechanical accuracy
o learner uses the writing process
o learner researches essay topic
o learner creates a thesis statement
o learner evaluates ideas, evidence and claim and considers opposing viewpoint
o learner chooses a line of reasoning (inductive/deductive) and method of organization

o in the classroom and library setting

o in peer or small group review
o through instructor conference
o under instructor observation
o by using a checklist or rubric

Learning Objectives
This learning plan addresses the following learning objectives to help you master the competency:
a. Use the writing process to brainstorm and organize initial ideas, create first draft, revise and edit, and produce final draft.
b. Use various resources to research essay topic: library, documentaries, Internet.
c. Create a thesis that makes a specific claim and is related to an issue that is arguable.
d. Write an introduction that both presents the thesis and supplies an interesting "hook".
e. Write body paragraphs that use a method of organization that corresponds with the thesis: cause/effect, comparison/contrast, narrative, definition, classification, or process.
f. Write body paragraphs that supply a range of evidence relevant to the thesis, including accurate citation of sources.
g. Write a conclusion that incorporates a summary of the argument and offers either a new perspective, solution or question related to the thesis.
h. Revise and edit for content, organization, grammar and mechanics.
