Using Word2000 with Bb5

Recommended procedure using FrontPage

  1. In Word, Select All
  2. Copy
  3. Paste into FP (FrontPage)
  4. Click the HTML tab (in FP)
  5. Select All
  6. Copy
  7. Paste into Bb (BlackBoard)
  8. Select the HTML radio button (in Bb)
  9. Click on Submit
  10. View results.
    1. You may find that some special formatting or effects have been lost or changed. If the results are unacceptable, you will need to rework the problem areas of your page. Use FrontPage to fix the problem areas. E.g. if a table displays incorrectly, try moving it or creating a new table. Drag your table's cell contents into the new table. Delete the old table and repeat steps 8-10 above.
    2. If severe problems still occur, you could try Format > Remove Formatting in FP. This might fix some problems, but you will need to reapply special formatting effects such as bolding and underlining text.
    3. If all else fails, replace step 3 above with Paste Special > Normal Paragraphs with line breaks. You will need to reconstruct any tables and reapply formatting. Any graphics will need to be reinserted. This method is drastic but it works very well. You will produce a lean & clean webpage which will load into your students' browsers much faster than all of the above resultant files.

Recommended Procedure for Creating New Documents

If you intend on creating new (from scratch) documents for use in Bb, it is recommended you use a web-authoring tool such as FrontPage from the start. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to always start out creating all of your documents as web pages since they will import into any good word processing program. (The reverse is not true as you will find.) Web page format (.htm) has become the lingua franca of the computer textual universe.

These directions assume you are using the Windows OS.
