Calculate Discounts

Recall that there are 3 general types of percent problems which you'll often encounter.

  1. Find the part (also called the percentage).
  2. Find the rate.
  3. Find the whole (also called the base).

Calculating discounts involves finding the part.

P = W•R where P is the part, W is the whole, and R is the Rate.

The discount or amount of discount is the product of the original price (the whole, W) and the discount rate (R).

Let's look at an example problem. Find the discount for a sweater that is 20% off. If the original price is $80, what is the discount?

Substituting into the equation P = WR, we get P = ($80)(20%) = $80(.2) = $16.

Now try it on your own!

The net price (sale price) is the original price minus the discount.

(1.) Find the net price for the sweater in the above example.

(2.) Calculate the sale price of a $120 jacket that is on sale for 10% off.
