Multiply Decimals

Multiplication of decimals is very similar to that of whole numbers. The only difference here is that we need to count decimal places; otherwise it's exactly the same as multiplying whole numbers.

To multiply decimals:

  1. In the numbers being multiplied, count the number of places to the right of the decimal points.
  2. Ignoring any decimal points, multiply the numbers.
  3. Place a decimal point in the product so that it has the same number of places to the right of it as the total number of places found in step 1.

Examples

.3  (1 decimal place)
*.05  (2 decimal places)
.015  (3 decimal places total)
4.01  (2 places)
*10  (0 places)
40.10  (2 places total)

40.10 can be written more simply as 40.1
