With the new GED2000, calculators will most likely be allowed for a large proportion of the math portion of the GED test. If my recollection is correct about 4/5 of the test will allow calculators and 1/5 not. GED2000 is still in the discussion stage as far as I know and no final decisions have been made. We should see this test in the year 2000 or 2001. For more information see (http://www.acenet.edu/programs/CALEC/GED/GED2000.html).

Check out the following URL for Internet sites related to the GED content areas. Each site is rated.  (http://litlink1.pbs.org/litteacher/peerlit/).

A ONE-STOP WEB SITE for teaching & learning resources. The web site, "Federal Resources for Educational Excellence," offers...

We in the Department of Education have had the honor & good fortune to work on this, during the past 9 months, with dozens of talented, committed individuals in more than 35 federal agencies. They have given countless hours to help develop this web site.  We want to thank these individuals, collectively known as  the FREE working group. And on behalf of the FREE working  group, we invite you to visit the site, explore it & tell us  what you think. Our hope is that this is just a first step!  The web site is at: ( http://www.ed.gov/free ).

There will be two other broadcasts, via the NASA satellite feed or PBS. The dates for the electronic field trips: rainforest (http://passport.ivv.nasa.gov/rainforest) are April 14 and April 21. In the meantime, check out the great website for more information and related activities. There is a teacher's guide online, and a hard copy can be ordered. As with other fieldtrips we've participated in, this one has captured our attention. There are lots of related math, writing, science, and critical reading activities that can be incorporated easily into an adult literacy curriculum. Take a look at: start.htm! (http://www.nsf.gov/od/nstw/start.htm).

If you're in charge of developing curriculum, be sure to include some activities on Familiy Literacy. If you don't have them already, look at the following URLs: http://www.famlit.org/home3.html or family literacy (http://www.ncfl@famlit.org).

PBS LiteracyLink  Visit www.pbs.org/literacy to connect to resources for adult learners and educators! Three of the new areas include:

  1. "PeerLit", a searchable database of reviewed instructional Web sites;
  2. "GED Links",information on the GED test and contacts for GED preparation; and
  3. "Other Resources", an annotated list of other literacy related Web sites.

Family Literacy Resource Home (http://www.pbs.org/learn/literacy/resources/resourcehome.html#Family Literacy).

The PBS seven part series called "Life by the Numbers." is scheduled to premier on Wednesday, April 8. Check local listings. The seven one-hour episodes include segments on the uses of mathematics in sports, entertainment, communications, global economics, local politics, medical research, cartography and oceanography. You can find out more about the upcoming series in an article by Devlin in the March 1998 FOCUS (page 6) or read the full text of Keith Devlin's article at:

There is also an elaborate web site devoted to the series.  It is at: http://www.mathlife.com

International Comparisons of Adult Literacy Levels... For more comparisons try this link: (http://nces.ed.gov/pubs/ce/) or try http://nces.ed.gov/pubs/ce/c9721a01.html . Check out the home page of HEC Software. (http://www.hecsoft.com). They have a literacy program that starts at zero.

A site for basic math (http://ecep1.usl.edu/ecep/math/math.htm). The material is appropriate for adults and covers many topics which are on the GED.

Even Start programs. For more information, check out NCFL's web site at: (http://www.famlit.org).

Lots of word problems (click for the answer),
excerpts and a free download. (URL: http://home.earthlink.net/~mathaid/mathbook.htm).

Check out the National Adult Literacy Database's Website, at http://www.nald.ca and look under Links to Internet Resources. There is a section there entitled "Educational Resources', then look under Math, and there are a number of links to interesting Websites.

Links to the GED testing service on the WLRN web pages. This is an excellent site for teachers and students. (http://www.acenet.edu/Programs/CALEC/GED/home.html). The address is case-sensitive so be careful on caps & small letters. Also check:  Http://www.uscitizenship.org

Thanks! Most of these links were e-mailed and forwarded from Cauline Howell.
