ALD Family Literacy

  • The goal of ALD's Family Literacy Initiatives is to assist students who are parents or care givers in obtaining skills necessary to become full partners in the educational development of their children and is an essential component of the basic skills program.

The following are some of our family literacy initiatives. Activities are provided in individual, small or large groups; through seminars or targeted workshops; via technology including computerized activities, videos, or Internet; and in many other ways.

  • Discussing and studying parenting skills/educational topics
  • Offering parent - child activities
  • Reading books in class and then taking them home to read to children
  • Distributing books to families to keep
  • Establishing/maintaining a family educational resource library
  • Collaborating with the America Reads Program
  • Developing student portfolios relevant to their families
  • Development of original children's stories by parent/care giver
  • Taping of children's books by students
  • Referring students to family resources
  • Creating your own family literacy innovative ideas
If you have any questions related to documentation or family literacy services or use of resources, please let Mary or me know.

Thanks for your cooperation,
Sheryl Helmkamp
